APL milestone – H2 trailer park

APL is preparing for the mobility of the future

Milestone for the APL: Since June, the newly built trailer station at the Landau location and a first hydrogen trailer from Westfalen AG have ensured the hydrogen supply and thus the testing of fuel cell drives. This enables uninterrupted operations and strong scalability – depending on customer requirements.

It was also a special day for the project team. The team was there live when the trailer was connected to the APL hydrogen network. Alexander Neber, project manager for hydrogen supply at APL: “I am proud of how we as a team here at the Landau location successfully set up this infrastructure measure in such a short time. Many colleagues from APL and Westfalen AG worked together and achieved this milestone through their commitment and specialist expertise. We are pleased about a scalable and reliable supply that lays the foundation for our hydrogen activities so that we can contribute to the development of future drives together with our customers.”

It is planned that two trailers will supply the test benches with hydrogen in the future – but in principle there is space for up to four trailers at the trailer station. Around 3.5 million m³ of hydrogen will flow to the test benches annually through the APL hydrogen network. There, the fuel cell drives are subjected to a long-term test as part of their development and put through their paces, or rather consumption values and system performance.

“We are very pleased that we can support APL with hydrogen and thus further promote the development of environmentally friendly technologies in the field of mobility. What’s also particularly nice is that in this collaboration, two medium-sized companies meet on an equal footing and show how sustainable progress can be shaped together,” explains Björn Bredlo, customer advisor for specialty gases at Westfalen.

With the hydrogen trailer, APL is not only setting the course for the decarbonization of the mobility sector and an energy source of the future, but can also continue to optimally serve its customers and respond to their wishes.

APL & APS merger

With the merger, we are strengthening our range of expertise and resources and increasing performance across all development areas, especially for you as a customer. The future APL will continue to invest in pioneering new technologies and at the same time ensure the necessary further development of classic drives for you.

We are already looking forward to intensified cooperation!

Company Run

On Thursday, May 19th it was that time again: After two virtual runs, the Firmenauf Südpfalz finally took place again as a live event with 3,012 participants from 164 companies.
We as the APL Group were also there! After a break of 2 years, we were finally able to take part in the Landau company run again. With over 60 colleagues from the APL Group, we successfully completed the 5 km route!

Did you know? Restructuring software development

APL has been developing and testing software for the automated operation of its test field for many years and offers its customers in the automotive industry services in the area of software development. In addition to the use of agile development methods, the focus is always on customer benefit and the quality of the solutions developed.

The automotive industry is currently undergoing a lot of change and is increasingly developing into a provider of highly integrated, intelligent and networked mobility solutions. The areas of software and data processing play a central role and their importance in the value chain is constantly increasing.

In order to be able to optimally support our customers on this path of change, APL has strategically repositioned itself in the area of software development and founded its own organizational unit for this growth area, which focuses fully on the areas of software development and data analytics. We will be able to use our expertise in these areas even more efficiently in the future and specifically combine it with the deep specialist knowledge at the vehicle system level in order to meet the increasing requirements and needs of our customers and shape the ongoing digitalization in the APL Group.

Can we support you with your challenges in the area of software development and measurement data processing or would you like to become part of this exciting area of the APL Group and strengthen our team? Then speak to us or take a look at our job advertisements.

We are looking forward to your contact!

Pattern recognition in drive development – online modelling and optimisation of control unit functions

Observation-based modeling approaches have always been an important cornerstone for characterizing unknown systems. Technical progress now enables efficient modeling with the help of pattern recognition methods in order to cover the growing need for optimization of increasingly complex overall systems. The following describes a methodology developed at APL that is used to optimize ECU functions using decision tree algorithms.

Influence of the volatility of lubricating oils on oil and particle emissions

Lubricating oil is increasingly seen as a construction element and is specifically adapted to the technical requirements of modern drive trains. In a joint project between Total and the APL Group, the influences of different lubricating oil formulations on emissions in a turbocharged gasoline engine with direct injection were examined. For this purpose, new methods combining dynamic measurement techniques and statistical analysis were used.

Cross-scale battery system simulation

In order to establish battery-electric vehicles in the mass market, in addition to the further development of the battery cell, optimizations at the module and overall system level are also required. APL addresses this increasingly complex topic with a close integration of simulation and test environments. The challenges of battery development and the possibilities of the simulation tools used must be closely examined in order to meet each development task with the optimal form of modeling. …

Did you know? Battery testing and development

Battery testing for BEV systems started at APL in 2009. Since then, our battery portfolio has grown significantly. The APL Group is your reliable and experienced partner in battery testing and development.

We are passionate about our customers’ development tasks across a wide range of battery-related issues. At the location in Landau, APL provides you with bundled expertise from the cell to the battery pack. Our team combines deep expert knowledge and uses our strong testing infrastructure to meet development goals:

Our analytics laboratory performs cell openings in a state-of-the-art glovebox for diagnosis and material analysis, and cells are also constructed or prepared according to customer requirements. In our cell testing facilities, battery cells are examined, for example: B. in terms of their performance, aging and swelling. Using pulse profiles and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, parameters for battery simulation are determined. We also develop battery simulation models of various levels of complexity in-house.

We continue via our module test field to testing at the battery system level. Through expansions to our existing battery testing fields, we have multiplied our testing capacities here in recent years. We are also happy to support you in the areas of construction, simulation, software/hardware development, BMS, EMC and application.

We are happy to provide our customers with comprehensive advice and support in projects. Fast charging strategies? Swelling? Thermal runaway and propagation? Gas analysis? Aging models? Direct cooling? – Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, we have the right answers.blog-
